Because an auto transformer shares a single winding between primary and secondary, it is smaller, lighter and more efficient than an equivalent two-winding transformer where full galvanic isolation is not required. Variable-ratio (Variac-style) units allow the output voltage to be adjusted continuously across the range, ideal for testing and voltage trimming.
